The London publishing house founded in 1768 by Edinburgh-born John Murray was to become arguably Britain’s most influential publisher. Murray authors shaped the modern world through their pioneering work in literature, science, travel and exploration, and politics and society: Jane Austen, Lord Byron, Charles Darwin, Sir Walter Scott, David Livingstone, Michael Faraday, Benjamin Disraeli (and his father Isaac) are just a few of the iconic figures whose work appeared under the Murray imprint.

Byron was of the opinion that his book was too small a format to sell (he was wrong), Jane Austen tartly requested a better turn of speed from the printer, while Darwin patiently answered the critics of his theories. Meanwhile Murray’s Travel Guides opened up the world to restlessly curious 19th century travellers – and prompted the ‘flagitious pirate’ Fritz Baedeker to publish inferior imitations under his own name.
