In his 16 years as House Master (1930–46), H.K. Marsden (or M'Tutor, as he was more familiarly known) had the care of 182 boys, of whom 30 were casualties, 11 being killed between the summer of 1943 and the summer of 1944. In H.K. Marsden's War Dead: Losses of an Eton House, the all-too-brief lives of these 30 men are recounted in a moving, elegant narrative. The book, illustrated with colour and black and white images throughout, serves both as the commemoration of a group of boys growing and learning under the guidance of a single House Master, as well as a reminder of the 'so much owed by so many to so few'.
