Rugby School - “with a fine disregard …” launched

7 November 2006

Today’s Rugby is a remarkable and innovative institution with every right to be seen as the UK’s leading coeducational boarding school. “with a fine disregard …” is a major new illustrated publication providing an insight into what makes Rugby School such a special and unique community.
“with a fine disregard …” is the first comprehensive account of Rugby for 40 years: the extraordinary changes, not least coeducation, that have taken place in that time are richly documented in words and images from all generations of Rugbeians, up to and including the current generation of pupils, vividly contrasting past and present.

What emerges is a true portrait of the School in a beautiful new colour book which not only displays the scale and scope of the Rugby campus to the full but also expresses Rugby’s traditions, values and spirit. Traditions of service are recalled in contributions from Rugbeians who remember being taught by shell-shocked veterans of World War One, or who served in World War Two; the Rolls of Honour in the Memorial Chapel list over 1,000 Rugbeians who fell in both wars. Service of a different kind is represented by a long tradition of working with local communities in Rugby and in deprived areas of London. Drama, music, art, literature and sport have all been as integral to a Rugby education, and to the Rugby spirit, as service to the community, and all are vigorously present in the book.

Rugbeians will discover much that is familiar, along with a great deal less so. Non-Rugbeians – particularly fans of Tom Brown’s Schooldays – will find a fascinating insider’s view of the reality of this famous British institution.
