Third Millennium signs up The Guards

8 November 2006

Third Millennium Publishing announced this week that they have signed an agreement with The Household Division to publish in Autumn 2007 a richly illustrated volume on the story of the seven famous regiments of the British Army known collectively as ‘the Guards’: the five regiments of Foot Guards – namely Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards, along with the two regiments of Household Cavalry – The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals.

The book, entitled Excellence in Action – A Portrait of The Guards, will be edited by Rupert Uloth, who served with The Life Guards in the late 1980s and early 1990s and is currently Features Editor of Country Life magazine.

The story of The Guards has often been told, both individually and jointly. To the world at large, their image has been brought to life by their ceremonial duties as the Regiments dedicated to the protection of the Sovereign -whether on duty at Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards, or at great national occasions such as The Queen's Birthday Parade, which the public know as the ‘Trooping the Colour’.

Yet The Guards have entered the 21st century as they have spent the previous 350 years, having been operational in the Balkans, Iraq and most recently, Afghanistan. Excellence in Action is a new, richly-illustrated publication which offers a compelling, wide-ranging colour portrait of The Household Division, reflecting the tradition of excellence of the individual regiments in the context of today's deployments as an elite force.

Third Millennium chairman, Julian Platt, commented this week:
‘We are delighted to be publishing this highly illustrated book on The Household Division, which follows on from the success of our recent service-related titles for The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and The Royal Hospital Chelsea.’

Sebastian Roberts, Major General commanding The Household Division added:
‘Over the years many books have been published on our Regiments, however, Excellence in Action will be unique in that it will include first-hand accounts and memories from former members and those serving today, along with specially commissioned photography of the work of The Guards regiments, both at home and abroad.’

Copies of Excellence in Action can be ordered now on a subscription basis from Third Millennium (www.tmiltd.com; tel: +44 (0)20 7336 0144) at a special pre-publication price of £32.50, plus p&p. The RRP on publication will be £45.00. All subscribers will also be listed in the book.
