'School Story' launched

Third Millennium launched today, School Story, a highly illustrated portrait commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Sussex-based independent prep school, Cumnor House.

Written by the former Headmaster, Nick Milner-Gulland, School Story, combines a narrative about Cumnor House’s birth and growth with a large number of memories and anecdotes, skilfully woven together by the author and fully illustrated with a variety of images from every decade since it was founded in 1931.

There are contributions from former pupils and parents including the actor Simon Williams, the journalist Dominic Lawson, former Daily Mirror editor, Piers Morgan, and cookery writer Katie Stewart, alongside a mix of serious, funny, irreverent, as well as poignant memories.

“Nowadays people suck their teeth at the idea of eight-year-olds being sent to boarding schools but to us baby-boomers Cumnor House wasn’t Colditz, say rather Butlins – it was the place you could get everything done: unharried by testy parents you could get on with your model plane, your hamster, your patch of garden, the Tarzan rope, marbles, your trombone, conkers, highland dancing, your part in The Tempest – perhaps there were lessons too,” remembers Simon Williams.

Piers Morgan had strong memories of the Discussion Groups: “They were endless heated debates with the likes of Quentin Curtis, James Lovegrove and Matt Byam Shaw, perfect practice for Question Time with William Hague, George Osborne and others.”
